It was close---the last I heard it passed by a 53 per cent margin. Very close. Jerry and I did our part.........we went and voted after he got home from work, then we went on and ate at one of the local churches that was having Election Day Meals. Was very good. Sandwiches, soups, noodles, mashed potatoes, several different salads, and many different pies and Texas sheet cake. Really nice. Price is donation, with set prices for take-out. We did both. It will be interesting to see how things develop with the casino's. It wouldn't surprise me if the ones who opposed the casino's, still try and fight to keep them from being built.

Posts: 661 (11/04/09 07:26:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I'm glad Ohio passed the casinos but there are definitely some other hurdles to get over according to articles I read this morning. The main reason it got passed is because of the jobs casinos will provide. According to the Toledo Blade, the casinos guaranteed 90% of the permanent jobs will go to Ohioans. It said there would be a 33% tax, which should help many communities. Now, I'd like to know where all the gamblers are going to come from with so many people out of work. But gamblers seem to find their way to casinos, no matter how bad things get. This will certainly hurt the casinos in the surrounding states but I guess it's survival of the fittest. I worked the local election for 15 hours yesterday. We had a 2 mill increased school millage on the ballot. Luckily, it got defeated big time. Most people in our area are having a hard enough time paying their property tax without adding more to them. My biggest challenge for the 15 hours of working was to keep my mouth shut and not influence people to vote no. But it looks like they read my mind Congrats on the casino issue win! Columbus really didn't want it to pass but the other big counties pushed it through. It will be interesting to see what happens now. We will still probably give Indiana most of our play since it feels more like an outing if you have to travel a bit to do it. Aretta: I often wonder why the recession hasn't hit our local casinos. Whenever I go on the weekends it is so crowded you can hardly find a machine you want to play. Chris

I will give Columbus and Cincinnati casino's a try. I am hoping the one in Columbus will be nice, because traveling 3-3 1/2 hours for a day trip is pretty tiring. Yes, I had read about Penn having two of the casino's. I had also read a while back that the casino's had agreed not to have hotels of their own, so that the local hotel/motels would be getting the business. I do hope it all works out for the good of the people and economy. Carol

No, just kidding (sorta)...I understand about not wanting traveling far to a casino, that's why it's hard for me (especially now) to go down to the Southern IN ones....and I'll never see Aretta....Toledo will get to see you instead. As for where the people will come from, it's like the movie Field of Dreams...If you build it, they will come! (I know it was "he" instead of "they" but it's kinda the same). If they build one in Toledo, I may have to go try that one out since it would be an easy drive down the toll road. I think it's really going to hurt the Southeastern IN casinos a lot. I understand what Chris said about traveling a little to make it feel more like an outing for the day. Here I live in Northwest IN with 5 casinos and I go across the border to Michigan and Four Winds.....speaking of that , I'll be heading out the door in about 3 hours or so. Free room, food and free gift (which I really don't want but will take since it's free) here I come!! I'm sure I'll be coming back with empty pockets but hope I still have fun. That's the main reason we go to Windsor, so it would be nice to have another choice. Windsor is 55 miles from us and crossing to another country. The new Toledo casino would be 42 miles and only crossing a state line. But going to Windsor is an adventure with being able to stay overnight. Just running down to Toledo for the day wouldn't be a mini-vacation. But a day trip to Toledo could give me a gambling fix between my visits to Windsor. Aretta (aka Simmie)

If the OH casinos are non smoking, maybe it won't hurt the Southeastern IN ones since I know people who say if they can't smoke in a certain casino (or restaurant) they won't go there. They usually change their minds though because when the restaurant I worked at went all non smoking some of the regular customers were ticked and say they would never be back...well after about a month they all started coming back. In my opinion, it would be silly to give up the food you like just because you can't smoke for an hour. I know if there were non smoking casinos in Indiana, I would probably go to them instead of Four Winds but then I really do like Four Winds so maybe I would still go there..

I haven't heard anything about them allowing smoking.

It will give us a choice of 2 fairly local casinos to choose from. Unfortunately, this may hurt Windsor since there a lot of northern Ohio people that go there for the no smoking also. Great news for you on the casinos. I heard more than I would ever want to know about them on WLW yesterday. They are set for 2012---right? MAYBE Kentucky will have a few (legal) slot machines by then as well.
